Kevlar – Carbon Race Kayak repairs

Kevlar is a great product. It’s often misunderstood with Kevlar Bullet Proof vests used for Army/Police protective situation. simply by having Kevlar in your kayak laminate won’t make it “Bulletproof”, the Police protective vests use a very dense weave of Kevlar and Stainless Steel plates to prevent knives and bullets from piercing them.

Kevlar has excellent tension and abrasion characteristics. It’s not very stiff (unlike Carbon Fibre) and it’s impossible to sand/shape. So it’s usually sandwiched between glass or carbon. It will stop a lightweight boat from tearing on a sharp rock, prevent an impact puncture and more.

This boat was damaged, leaking and we could see deep scars, where if it weren’t for the Kevlar woven into the Carbon Fibre laminate, it would be at the bottom of some river by now! A coat of epoxy resin, then sprayed with top quality Durepox clear coat, its waterproof, and looking like new and ready to compete in the Coast to Coast in 2023.

As a kind gesture I revived the paddle and rudder stock.Beautiful hull and very lightweight – ready to race!
